How to share your startup idea safely (and why you should)

5 min read · Updated 13 October 2026

Many first-time founders keep their idea secret for months, afraid someone will copy it. In practice, ideas are rarely stolen, and keeping quiet costs you the feedback, co-founders and customers you need. Here's how to share with confidence.

Why ideas are rarely stolen

An idea is the easy part. Building it takes years of work, a team, money and many decisions. Most people who hear your idea are busy with their own plans, and those who could build it usually prefer to back the person who's obsessed with it: you.

What you gain by sharing

  • Feedback that reveals problems before you spend money
  • Early users who want it to exist
  • Co-founders and developers who get excited and join
  • Investors who see your progress over time

Protect what really matters

Share the problem, the solution and who it's for. Keep the details that give you a real edge for later conversations: unique data, partnerships, technical secrets or patentable inventions.

Keep proof of when you shared it

On UnbuiltHub every idea gets a timestamp and a fingerprint of the original text, so you can always show what you shared and when. It isn't a patent, but it's useful evidence.

Choose who can see it

Public ideas get the most feedback and show up in search. Members-only ideas are hidden from search engines and visitors. Invite-only ideas are visible only to people you invite. Start public if you can; go private for the sensitive parts.

What about NDAs?

Most investors won't sign a non-disclosure agreement for a first conversation, and asking can make you look inexperienced. Use NDAs later, when you share detailed plans, code or customer data with a specific partner.
