I have a problem with modern fishing lures because they are to commonly used. I made up a simple cheap bait i call fraybait.

Fraybait

The problem

Me and many of fisherman have problems with modern lures because they are so heavily overused.

The solution

I would build Fraybait. Its simple and very cheap. i would make a lure out of frayed rope with one end unfrayed so i can tie on my fishing line. The frayed rope fibers would get caught on the rough surfaces in the fishes mouth until you land them and take it out of the fish's mouth.

Target customers

Fisherman would be the target customers.

Business model

you sell it for maybe $1 a lure and there is your money.

Progress so far

I have made a few prototypes and have caught more fish on them then most artificial lures.

  • Problem clarity3.5

"Lures are overused" is vague: it doesn't say whether fish get lure-shy, lures cost too much, or something else, so it's hard to know what pain Fraybait fixes.

  • Market size3.5

Fishing tackle is a big market, but frayed rope lures mostly work on toothy fish like gar and needlefish, which is a small niche.

  • Competition3.0

Hookless frayed nylon rope lures already exist and sell cheaply (for example Gar-u-lator and handmade Etsy versions), and many anglers make their own.

  • Feasibility8.0

Cutting and fraying rope is cheap and simple, and you already have working prototypes.

  • Monetization2.5

At $1 a lure, with no patent and a design anyone can copy from a hardware store rope, profit after packaging, shipping and marketplace fees will be tiny.

  • Timing4.0

Nothing new makes this more urgent today, although hookless gar fishing does seem to be getting a bit more attention online.

Strengths

  • • Very low cost to make, so you can test and change designs quickly.
  • • You have real prototypes and say they catch fish, which is more proof than most ideas have at this stage.
  • • Hookless lures are easy to explain and can be safer to handle than treble hooks.

Risks

  • • The idea is not new. Hookless frayed nylon rope lures for gar are already sold on eBay and Etsy, and guides teach anglers to make their own, so it would be hard to protect or stand out.
  • • It only works well on fish with rough or toothy mouths, like gar and needlefish. That shrinks the 'all fishermen worldwide' market a lot.
  • • Fibers tangled in teeth can be hard to remove and can hurt released fish. Some places also have local rules on lure types, which could hurt reviews or limit where you can sell.

Next steps

  • • Write down your catch results (species, place, number of fish) for Fraybait versus a normal lure over 10 or more trips, so you know which fish it really works on.
  • • Buy two or three existing rope lures (like the Gar-u-lator) and fish them side by side with Fraybait to find one clear advantage, such as colour, built-in rattle, spinner blade or easier release.
  • • List a small batch as a 3–5 pack for $8–12 on Etsy or eBay, or sell through a local bait shop, to see if people will pay and what they say about it.
